Everybody who is slightly interested in modern jazz knows the name of Mark Helias. The American double bass player has worked with everyone from Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry and Carlos Ward to Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams and Cecil Taylor.

With Tom Rainey (dr) and Tony Malady (ts), Helias founded the trio OPEN LOOSE in 1996 to play his compositions which allow open form improvisation.

As the three musicians get familiar with the pieces they recompose them on the bandstand. "The most interesting developments come when we start altering the compositions in a creative way, maintaining the spirit of the piece but taking it somewhere else, into an unimagined place," says Helias. "Every time we come together it's different, it's new and wonderful."

Free Jazz at its best. Only discovered Tim Berne recently. I love the tension between structure and improvisation on this live album. You get extended really crazy improvisations out of which a structured driving riff will appear. Its really thrilling! Like tension exploding! So yeah, I love Bloodcount but I realise this wont be for everyone 😁. Crinklechips

So,so pleased and gratified to see Henry's Pi Recordings on BC! He is, without exception, one of the most visionary and extraordinary composers of the 20th/21st Century, in my humble view...I have listened to him for decades (the Mosaic Box Set is an essential experience) and his current band, Zooid is very important, I think (but then, he doesn't need my approbation; I listen with old ears)...if you don't know his work then listen to anything/everything you can get your hands on... His musical acumen astounds me...this new album is no exception...recommended; body and soul... John Cratchley
